My Father’s World 2nd grade (with tag along 1st graders)

Join me in a photo journey of our 2nd grade school year (with tag along 1st graders.) We used My Father’s World Adventures in U.S. History for 2nd grade and My Father’s World Learning God’s Story for 1st grade (we only used the Phonics and Language Arts portion.)

Meet my 2nd graders. Clark was 7 and Katy was 8.

Meet my 1st graders. Brody was 6 and Callie was 5.

We do the majority of our school in our basement. But sometimes we move our work upstairs and even outside on some days.

After about a month of school, I decided to make our school more mobile. We started doing school wherever we felt like it. Sometimes we were at the dinner table. Sometimes we were outside on the porch and other times we were on the road going to doctor appointments. This worked well for us for many months.

Every year I fall in love with our curriculum because of things like this. It had us write letters to each child explaining to them why we gave them their names. It also had us tell them the meaning of their names.

We also made name necklaces.

For 2nd grade we used Language Lessons for Today for English. I love it’s laid back approach.

For 2nd grade Spelling we used Spelling by Sound and Structure.

The 1st graders started in Singapore math but halfway through the year we changed to Math-U-See Alpha. The 2nd graders were in Singapore math.

100 day chart.

They loved learning about how the Vikings discovered North America. I don't normally get this crafty, but since it was our first history lesson this year I wanted to make it memorable.

I find the kids all over the house doing their schoolwork.

Science time!

We learned so much this year! The kids loved all the Science experiments.

Solar eclipse. It was amazing seeing it in person.

Learning about Christopher Columbus, Jamestown and the Native Americans.

Making butter.

Field Trip at the Comer Museum in Sylacauga.

Field trip to Blue Bell Ice Cream Factory in Sylacauga.

This year we learned the names of Jesus.

Clark's Benjamin Franklin illustration. I love it!

Paul Revere hats.

Writing with a quill.

In September, we joined a homeschool co-op. The kids loved it! It was only one day every two weeks.

One of the kids' classes at the homeschool co-op. It is a nature class called "Muddy Boots".

The "Muddy Boots" class went to the Anniston Museum of Natural History for a field trip.

Making Hasty Pudding. It was a big hit for all the kids.

Clark made his own Colonial America Flag.

Learning about the Liberty Bell.

Learning about all the different states. We often made treats made from popular produce from certain states.

We decorated a tree for the birds to feed on.

For Halloween, the kids chose to dress like the Colonials. Clark was George Washington, Brody was Paul Revere, Callie and Katy were Felicity Merriman and her best friend Elizabeth.

Watching a local performance of Hansel and Gretel.

Thanksgiving week we learned about the Mayflower and the first Thanksgiving.

We took measurements to see how big the Mayflower was. It really wasn't very big for so many people on board.

The whole week we did Pumpkin science experiments. It was so fun!

We made lots of festive placemats for our Thanksgiving dinner.

We made costumes and put on a play.

Keep in mind, I don't come up with all this cool stuff. It is in our curriculum. I'm not that cool of a mom.

Hot Chocolate and the Nutcracker. We studyed many of the works of Tchaikovsky and the Nutcracker was our favorite.

Painting Nutcrackers. I think I enjoyed this more than the kids!

All dressed up and ready to see Alabama Ballet’s Nutcracker. Since the kids knew the story line beforehand, they really enjoyed it.

We learned many of the names of Jesus this year. We made a cookie cake for Immanuel.

Our Homeschool Co-op’s Christmas Party.

Trip to Little River Canyon and a helicopter surprise! While we were admiring the falls we heard a helicopter circling overhead. As we were walking back, the helicopter landed. It was a state trooper helicopter. They invited us over to check it out. The kids loved it!

School by the fireplace.

I had the great privilege to teach George Washington one day.

Our history timeline.

Here are some of our read-alouds this year. They were all so good!

We finished our year in May 2018. We had a wonderful year with many cherished memories.

Next year, the kids will all be in the same curriculum. We plan to start My Father’s World Exploring Countries and Cultures next school year.
